Millennium Mambo (2001) / 1h 59m / Directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien

A young woman navigates life in Taiwan, dealing with a toxic boyfriend and befriending a connected businessman.

Love the cinematography, especially the color grading. The lack of added music with the replacement of voice narration makes the film more engaging.

Return of an Adventurer (Hands Up!) (1966) / 34m / Directed by Moustapha Alassane

A man returns from the United States to Niger with cowboy-related clothes as gifts for his friends, shifting their reality into a Western film.

The short film is fully action-packed, quickly and violently showcasing how the outfits immediately embody the friend group as cowboys.

Typhoon Club (1985) / 1h 55m / Directed by Shinji Sōmai

A group of students gets stranded at their school overnight from a raging typhoon, as current and ongoing relationships develop, emerging suspicions and obsessions.

It’s a film with out-of-nowhere scenes, and you don’t know what will happen next. Because there are multiple storylines within the class, at and outside of school, you figure out how their fixations on the past and future affect their actions.

Fresh Kill (1994) / 1h 20m / Directed by Shu Lea Cheang

A lesbian couple from Staten Island discover that a global corporation has been polluting and creating toxic matter, including its heavy impact on fish and cat food.

An experimental film, from the breaking-the-fourth-wall dialogue to unique set designs, tackling environmental topics still debated today.

Nobuta wo Produce (2005) / 10 episodes / Directed by Hitoshi Iwamoto & Norika Sakuma

A very social student teams up with a polar-opposite student to make the new, and extremely timid, student popular.

This is one of the few J-dramas that I thoroughly enjoyed. The friendships and the theme of identity play a huge part in each episode.
