About Multimedia Maya
my backstory to joining this platform
It’s been over a year since I actually started posting on Substack, so why not write an “About Multimedia Maya” (aka about me) post?
I started posting here as another creative outlet. At the time, I never found the right platform for me to say what I wanted in words besides on camera. Funny enough, I started right around TikTok’s less-than-24-hour ban. Seemed like lots of people wanted something new too:
As I began sharing a few lifestyle, motivational, and creative articles, the idea for the “Weekly Multimedia” series suddenly appeared. Based solely on my TikTok series at the time, “My favorite videos of the week,” I wanted to expand outside of videos and recommend other categories weekly. And now, the series is officially a year old.
Besides this platform becoming another outlet for me, I was also looking for work. I graduated from university in 2023; Instead of worrying, I took that energy towards art. I eventually found a job in the creative space, which I am very grateful for, because it is a stepping stone in my post-graduate and now professional career in media.
My profile bio reads:
It has remained the same ever since I posted my first note. And every time I read it, I recall the many times I took risks in my art, my skills, and in all life aspects as I continue to learn and grow.
I had a voice insecurity from being mocked by students in elementary school for my speech and how I said certain words. I felt like an outsider, and that lowered my self-confidence. Journaling became the main source of expression, and has been ever since.
Over time, I began to regain that confidence through writing, filming, and even public speaking. A few weeks before I secured that media job, I gave my first-ever public speaking presentation to senior-year media students at my university about the current job market. 7-year-old Maya would’ve been very surprised, and proud.
I don’t post for the sake of focusing only on growing my audience. I post for the love of doing so.
To my followers and subscribers, thank you for supporting my newsletter and my work. To the new readers, thank you for reading.
Sincerely,
Maya S.
Update: After writing this article, I found out my current media role is being dissolved. I’m taking that as a sign to lock in on my independent creative work [more Substack articles on the way].
